Kathmandu: Nepali Congress leader and Member of Parliament Dr Sunil Sharma has announced his claim for the post of Joint General Secretary in the party’s upcoming 15th General Convention, warning that he may contest alternative senior positions if his bid is overlooked.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday, Dr Sharma said he considers the post of Joint General Secretary his “natural claim,” citing his political journey from the grassroots level. He stated that sidelining second-tier leaders would not be in the party’s long-term interest.

Dr Sharma, who is aligned with Dr Shekhar Koirala, said that if his claim is ignored, he is prepared to contest for the post of General Secretary or Vice President. He further cautioned that if obstacles arise even in those positions, he would consider forming a separate panel and challenging the leadership with a new candidate carrying a “clean image.”

“I have remained with Dr Shekhar Koirala’s side so far,” he said, adding that leadership roles should reflect contribution, experience and acceptance within the party ranks.
